Creative Writing: “The Missing Chapter”

This project allowed me to write my own “missing chapter”— an alternative ending, if you will— to Jane Eyre. The class itself was based on literary analysis of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, and various adaptations slightly renaming characters but reflecting the basic plot. Being free to write my own dialogue within the voice of the characters was both an insightful and enjoyable experience.

Graphic Design: Document Design Journal

Probably my favorite project employing both technical editing and writing, this end-of-semester project required me to download and learn basic functions and features of Adobe InDesign. Within this file, I had the opportunity to select 10 documents of my choice, ranging in variety from concert promotional flyers, to local restaurant menus, to my very own document created in an Intro to Photoshop course. Relating my work experience as a stagehand at IU Bloomington, I created a theater stage backdrop to quite literally “showcase” my selected documents and accompanying analysis. Within the analysis, I reflected on the document’s design elements, my immediate subjective reaction, and its overall effect in reaching the intended audience.

Technical Editing: Waterfront Procedure Manual & Documentation Process Memo

Last semester, I had the opportunity to obtain a five page document from a non-profit organization for the purpose of contributing my copy edits to the document. I was granted permission by my former employer at an all-abilities summer camp in Fort Wayne, Indiana to find both textual and visual errors in the procedure manual and correct them. My marks are in red pen ink, utilizing the copyediting symbols and characters through our Technical Editing course book. Accompanying the edited document, I provided a memo to my instructor regarding the document’s changes, as well as the same written process to my former employer.

Technical Writing: Product Design Analysis

As part of an assignment titled “Rhetoric in Everyday Design Analysis”, I wrote a review critiquing the design choices of the Celsius brand energy drink can. My review was written as a memo to my Advanced Technical Writing course instructor. Two specific sections we were meant to analyze were the “packaging” of the product, as well as its “positioning” where found; in the case of my example, its location in a grocery store display. This document marked my first experience writing captions for photographs—a common requirement in image-based documentation.

Digital Writing: Website Design

As part of a digital writing course, I developed a niche website that applies core design principles—such as proximity, alignment, and clear content structure—to enhance user experience. Created through WordPress software programming, my website “Hoosier Hiking” is designed to engage both new and seasoned hikers by highlighting some of Indiana’s most scenic state parks, popular trails, and unique natural features.

Technical Writing: Scientific Writing Research Report

As part of a Writing in the Sciences course, I conducted original research through a self-designed survey to explore the question: “Does social media affect the mental health, well-being, and academic performance of students?” I distributed the survey via Google Forms to friends and peers at Indiana University Bloomington, collecting both qualitative and quantitative self-reported data. Using the IMRAD structure—Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion—I wrote a detailed research report analyzing my findings and situating them within the broader context of existing academic literature on the subject.

HTML and Coding: My Coded Resumé

Using the W3Schools website builder, I created a résumé entirely with HTML, applying proper coding structure and formatting to build and style the content. As my first experience working with index.html, the project taught me the essential procedures and detailed structure involved in building web pages and organizing website content. This project helped me strengthen my understanding of HTML fundamentals, including how to source and display images by correctly linking to local desktop files. The link to view the document is embedded here and in the section header. By searching for and clicking on the “Inspect” tool, you can find the coding structures and content embedded on the page.
